Project: Homage to Archimedes
This piece of Light Art, publicly exhibited at the Square of 18 Englishmen Square/ Crete in 2004, is a Homage to Archimedes, who was the inventor of the truncated Icosahedron, which in turn determined until today the way a soccer ball is assembled out of 20 Hexagons and 12 Pentagons. Archimedes is best remembered for his last words: “Don’t disturb my circles” a message of relentless devotion to creativity and peace. A randomized arrangement of luminous circles prompts unsettling feelings and makes us perceive the space within the ball, exercising again our perception of transparency. Glass pieces are laser-engraved, according to the desired conversion of tiny LED sources – light points inside the Archimedes sphere into thin circles.
